Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.
Proverbs 4:23 NIV
February is National Heart Month. We celebrate love on Valentine’s day and many organizations promote physically taking care of our hearts. The heart is far more than a muscle that pumps life-giving blood to our bodies. It’s a vessel that holds our emotions and feelings.
God asks us to write His Word upon our hearts. By doing so, we will have His goodness within us. According to Proverbs we are to guard our hearts for it is the wellspring of life (ESV). From it flows life. If we carry goodness, goodness will flow from it.
Our heart is our center which is why it is important to guard it. When we don’t take care of it emotionally, physically, and spiritually, it deteriorates. We become ill. We are subject to heart attacks and depression. However, through exercising our hearts with prayer and physical movement, we can build up a barrier to the negative things that affect it.
Are you guarding your heart? If so, what steps are you taking to guard it? Or do you need to do more to protect it? What could you change that would help you guard your heart more?
